Carson-Newman College is a historically Baptist liberal arts college located in Jefferson City, Tennessee, northeast of Knoxville. Current enrollment is about 2200.

The current president is Dr. James Netherton. Ralph H. Elliot of Rochester, New York is the most recent recipient of the Distingished Alumnus award.

History

The college is named for Baptist layman James Harvey Carson (1801-1880) and the Newman family, represented by William Cate Newman (1809-1890). Carson-Newman College was founded in 1851 as the Mossy Creek Missionary Baptist Seminary. The College officially became Carson-Newman College in 1888 upon the joining of the all-male school Carson College with the all-female Newman College.
