Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) is a public university in Oregon with a main campus in southwest Portland and a smaller campus in Beaverton. It was formed in 1974 as the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center, combining state dentistry, medicine, and nursing programs into a single center. It was renamed Oregon Health Sciences University in 1981 and took its current name in 2001, as part of a merger with the Oregon Graduate Institute of Science and Technology in Beaverton.
The university maintains a number of outpatient primary care facilities including the Physician's Pavilion on-campus as well as throughout the Portland metropolitan area. Since 1998, the university has controlled the Oregon National Primate Research Center, located in Washington County.
History
The university can trace its roots back to the 1860s. Its primary campus, Marquam Hill (nicknamed "Pill Hill"), was established in 1917 by the donation of 20 acres (80,000 m²) from the Oregon-Washington Railroad and Navigation Company and 88 acres (360,000 m²) from the family that owned the now-defunct Oregon Journal.
