Shawnee State University is the regional state university of Southern Ohio. It prepares students for the changing needs of business, industry, education, and society through its diversified degree programs. Shawnee State University provides higher education that fosters competence in oral and written communication, scientific and quantitative reasoning, and critical analysis/logical thinking. Shawnee State University provides opportunities for continuing personal and professional development, intellectual discovery, and appreciation for the creative and performing arts.

History

Shawnee State has come a long way in becoming a university. In 1970, Scioto Community Tech College was formed at the Scioto County Joint Vocational School. Meanwhile, Massie Hall was occupied by Ohio University's Southern branch. In 1975, Ohio University Southern and Scioto Community Tech College merged to become Shawnee State Community College. In 1977, major expansions occurred with the construction of the Health and Nursing buildings along with a Massie Hall extension forming the adminstration offices for the university.

From a College to a University

In 1986, with the help of Vern Riffe, Shawnee State became a university with the bill's passage. The James A. Rhodes Athletic Center and the Clark Memorial Library had just been completed at the same time. However, it was a rough start. A year later, the teachers went on strike, but it was later resolved. In 1992, the Advance Technology Center was completed with plans to add a planeterium which was completed in the late-90's. In 1993, the Cafeteria/Union was completed. In 1994, Second Street was closed to traffic and the road itself was removed from University grounds to add walkways. The following year, the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts was completed adding art labs with local and national performaces shown off at the auitorium. Today, most expansions are occuring off-campus with student housing being constructed to increase the student population. Other expansions plans are in planning stages to expand university grounds over to Offenere Street in the coming years.
